Facing the New Reality: Strategic Paths for Nonprofits

If you've been affected by federal program cuts or are considering deeper collaboration or a merger with another nonprofit, this series is for you. In this five-part series, seasoned experts will outline critical paths to guide your nonprofit during these challenging times.

Five-Part Series

All webinars will be recorded and shared with registered participants.

  1. Strategic Decision Time: Sunset or Sustainability – June 18th
Focus on the strategic decisions needed to be made if an org has lost more than 30% of its funding due to EOs or other government programs being cut (state, county, etc.) The session will help nonprofit executives radically rethink their organization’s sustainability.
  2. Business Remodeling for Sustainability – June 25th
Challenges to funding and staffing have become all too commonplace in nonprofits in the past few years. Now, with system-wide cuts at the federal level to many core community programs, leaders are facing an unprecedented disruption for many nonprofits. This is not a situation that our sector can fundraise our way out of. It will take fundamental business remodeling and forecasting for multiple scenarios. This session will offer several strategies for nonprofits to successfully navigate this difficult situation.
  3. Reforecasting Financials in Times of Chaos – July 9th
Now that the freezes have turned into real programmatic cuts and the end of specific federal funding sources, how to best apply the funds you have will be paramount in your future. Hoping that court orders may hold back some of these cuts or that you may be able to raise enough private funds to offset losses can be part of your plan, but they can’t be the whole plan. Tough decisions will need to be made on how to strategically manage your treasury going forward. NAO invites you to this strategic finance session to reforecast your budget in these chaotic times.
  4. Navigating Human Resources in Response to Federal Changes – July 16th
Because our team members are our greatest assets, one of the most challenging decisions nonprofits that lose funding may face is staffing changes. As your organization grapples with program cuts, there are critical “dos” and “don’ts” when deciding how and when to furlough staff. There are also real needs that staff chosen to stay on will have from leadership. NAO invites you to this strategic Human Resources session to reforecast your staffing needs and support your team in these chaotic times.
  5. Responsible Sunsetting, Hibernation or Dissolution: The Dos and Don’ts – July 30th
As a result of significant disruption to the nonprofit ecosystem, there are organizations whose funding has been so deeply impacted that they will not be able to continue operating. How, in these chaotic times, does a nonprofit think through responsibly sunsetting their organization? This session will help answer questions and provide a framework to consider related human resources decisions, financial commitments, communications and legal issues. In some cases, there may be opportunities for continuation of individual programs, even if the organization currently housing them will sunset. You’ll get practical advice on navigating various scenarios to get the best possible outcomes for those affected.
