Today we received the news that the federal court in Rhode Island issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) in the lawsuit brought by the National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) and a broad coalition of other plaintiffs seeking to protect SNAP benefits! Under the TRO, the Administration is required to distribute contingency funds to continue food assistance.
While temporary, this order provides immediate relief to the 757,000 Oregonians who otherwise would have lost access to food assistance, and the nonprofit food banks and food pantries that have been stepping up in their communities to fill the gaps.
This is a significant win for those receiving SNAP benefits and for democracy – however it is expected that the administration and DOJ will file an appeal (as early as tonight) and it could quickly elevate to the Supreme Court. In the meantime, the funds have been required to be released, and our hope is that recipients will receive those benefits quickly without too much delay.
The power of membership shines in this moment – both with NAO and NCN. NAO was able to quickly connect NCN with several member organizations who were impacted to give strength to the lawsuit filed. We are stronger as a collective and we are thankful for all our member organizations who were willing to lend their voice to those who filed litigation. If you aren’t a member of NAO, now is a great time to join.
