Being Oregon’s only statewide nonprofit membership organization representing and supporting charitable nonprofits of all sizes, geographic locations, and missions across the state, NAO is excited to spotlight nonprofit members, share their success stories and exciting news, and raise awareness of their cause and the impact these amazing nonprofits make in our communities.
We’re excited to kick off by featuring one of NAO’s founding members, the Coos Art Museum (CAM)! Located in Coos Bay, the museum serves as a cultural resource for Oregon’s South Coast through exhibitions and educational programs that inspire appreciation and exploration of visual art.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Executive Director Lydia Heins and were amazed to learn the museum has recently opened a CAM Studio. This second location will serve as an art studio and education space. This new facility will allow the organization to offer more classes, workshops, and community events, furthering CAM’s commitment to expanding its community engagement efforts. In addition, CAM recently initiated a capital campaign to update its main museum’s ADA compliance, sustainability, interior design, and curb appeal!

As many organizations can relate, opening a new facility comes with a significant cost to keep the space and ensure this service remains a resource for the community. When asked what CAM’s current needs are, support for the new studio and capital campaign was among them. Funders and donors can help by contributing to their general fund, which will be directed toward staffing, materials, and operational costs, or the Facilities Fund to assist their capital campaign efforts. CAM welcomes connections with anyone interested in partnering on programming, capital projects, or exhibitions. Coos Art Museum constantly seeks volunteers who are passionate about art and community service to assist with events, exhibitions, and educational programs. Lydia recently participated in NAO’s five-part virtual learning cohort, “Cultivating Effective Employees: HR Tools and Strategies For Success,” which she found helpful for their growing organization. The Museum is still a small team (8 staff), but it was great to have best practices in mind as they level up their programming and exhibitions.
Lastly, Lydia wanted to share that CAM is currently accepting artwork for their Biennial 2024. This exhibition is open to any artist residing in Oregon. Only one submission per person will be accepted, but anyone can submit and see their work on display in a Museum! If you ever find yourself in the area, we encourage you to stop by the Coos Art Museum at 235 Anderson Avenue, Coos Bay, OR 97420. We are so appreciative of Lydia’s time and all the work CAM provides to our community. To learn more about CAM and their programming, visit https://www.coosart.org.
