A substantial financial asset of a charitable organization is its tax exempt status, yet leadership often places little attention toward this asset. Ensure your organization fully understands your tax exempt status and how to protect and maintain it. This session will explore what it takes to qualify as a tax exempt charity and the top ten tax issues that you and your board should understand for appropriate tax oversight:
- Underreporting of unrelated business taxable income
- Employment tax issues including executive compensation, retirement plans, and Healthcare Reform
- Form 990 issues
- Identity theft: Due diligence and remedies
- Limits on lobbying and the prohibition against political campaign intervention
- New regulations for Type III supporting organizations
- When is it useful to establish a separate entity?
- International issues
- What procedures should be followed for an IRS audit?
- Governance
