What does Sarbanes-Oxley really say about audit committees? Can a finance committee function as an audit committee? How can an audit committee interact effectively with the auditor and management?

This presentation will explore the reasoning behind audit committee regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, and will highlight opportunities for helping your nonprofit organization board to maximize its ability to oversee the audit process given limited resources often available to them.

Topics to be included are:

  • Learn what Sarbanes-Oxley says about audit committee requirements for nonprofit organizations.
  • Understand the pros and cons of audit committees.
  • Develop a better understanding of audit oversight committee toolboxes available, and how you can make them workable for your nonprofit.
  • Brainstorm and gather information on efficient and practical tricks and tips to improve the audit oversight process.

About the Presenter

Kris Oliveira is a Principal Member of Kern & Thompson, LLC and has 20 years of audit and tax experience focusing on serving not-for-profit organizations and other privately held organizations. Kris has experience with audits and accounting systems in a variety of sectors, including not-for-profit organizations and OMB Circular A-133 federal and state funded organizations under Yellow Book Audit requirements, educational organizations, arts, affordable housing, workforce development, membership, and social service organizations.

Kris has been a presenter for the OSCPA Annual Statewide Non-Profit Conference, the OSCPA monthly Knowledge Network, and the Nonprofit Association of Oregon. Kris is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA).

Kris is chair of the OSCPA Non-Profit Strategic Interest Team and chaired the 2013 and 2014 OSCPA Not-for-Profit Conferences, serves on the FASB Not-for-Profit Resource Group Committee, and also serves as Treasurer of the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra.
