About the Presenters
Cynthia Cumfer maintains a private law practice in Portland and works exclusively with nonprofit organizations around the state. Cindy has represented well over a thousand nonprofit groups as an attorney since 1978. Her clients represent a wide range of nonprofit organizations and she provides services for all phases of nonprofit life. She recently drew on her extensive experience to develop a new approach to board trainings that her clients are finding very useful and she is finding very fun. Cindy is the co-author of The Oregon Nonprofit Corporation Handbook. She developed and taught Nonprofit Law at Lewis & Clark Law School and currently teaches classes on nonprofit law for a clinic there. She has presented over one hundred workshops to nonprofit board members, executive directors, staff, volunteers, lawyers, and accountants on nonprofit issues, including many for FSR. She is the author of numerous chapters on nonprofit topics for lawyers and accountants. Cindy also has a PhD in History from UCLA and is interested in exploring why our nonprofit heritage matters to us today. Learn more about Cindy at www.cumfer.net.
Katherine DeYoung is a Certified Public Accountant who worked with nonprofit organizations through her accounting practice for more than 30 years. Kathy founded Center for Nonprofit Stewardship when she became aware that board members lacked training opportunities, yet were responsible for governing organizations crucial to the well being of communities. She now spends all of her time helping this situation as the executive director of the Center for Nonprofit Stewardship. Kathy is the co-author of a popular financial risk assessment workbook and important documents organizer for governing board members. She has been a consultant to nonprofit boards and a frequent national presenter on the topics of understanding financial information and protecting organizations from embezzlement.
Kirk Harvey is the Chief Investigator for the Charitable Activities Section of the Oregon Department of Justice. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner with 32 years experience in governmental regulation and law enforcement. Prior to his appointment to Chief Investigator, Kirk served as an Investigative Auditor for the Charitable Activities Section of the Department of Justice. Kirk has an undergraduate degree in accounting from Oregon State University and a Master of Public Administration with concentrated studies in of nonprofit administration from the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University.
