Decolonizing Data: Document the Movement

Virtual
  • Member Price: $40.00
  • Non-member Price: $60.00

About this event

Data can be a tool for documenting your story of impact across time and varying social-political climates. Data has now become a liability when you’re building for ethical and fair treatment in hostile conditions. In an era where language and visibility can be weaponized, the way we document our work matters as much as the work itself. This session explores decolonizing approaches to data that center the people most impacted, resisting extractive practices, and structuring records to withstand scrutiny without compromising safety or values. Participants will learn how to make documentation a shield for the movement, not a tool for its undoing.

Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Understand Decolonizing Principles – Learn what it means to challenge dominant, extractive data practices and replace them with community-centered approaches.
  2. Identify Risk and Protection Points – Recognize how documentation can safeguard or endanger people, projects, and movements.
  3. Structure Data for Integrity – Use frameworks that help you reimagine how you engage with your data, allowing you to meaningfully learn from your data as well as report out on impact while centering your org’s mission.
  4. Center Those Most Impacted – Design data systems that honor the agency, privacy, and priorities of the communities served.

Methods:

  • Bring your own experiences!
  • Map your work, your org(s), and your dreams.
  • Leave with a co-developed toolbox.

Cost

$40 for NAO Members
$60 for Nonmembers
