Congratulations, you got the grant! Now what? Knowing how to effectively manage grants is an important part of your nonprofit’s operations. This series will provide a comprehensive guide to the fundamentals and complexities of grant administration, tailored specifically for small to mid-size nonprofits in rural areas. Participants will learn about the entire grant lifecycle, grant budgets, compliance requirements, and more. Participants will leave this series with practical strategies and tools to streamline grant administration, enhance organizational capacity, and ultimately improve their organization’s ability to secure and utilize funds effectively.

Space is limited. Interested participants must register by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24.

Cohort Guidelines:

  • This learning cohort is intended to support small to mid-size 501(c)(3) nonprofits in rural communities in Oregon. 
  • This cohort is limited to 15 individuals with no more than two representatives from one organization.
  • Participants make a commitment to attend all sessions so we can collectively work together and build a network of support. 
  • Conversations will be held as confidential to allow for depth and breadth of exploration.
  • Participants will help guide the sessions and materials to meet their priorities.

Outline

  • Understand the basic components of grant administration and why it’s important.
  • Identify key phases in the grant lifecycle: pre-award, award, post-award, and closeout.
  • Learn how to establish a system for managing grant documentation and communications, even with no or minimal staff.

  • Learn how to create a realistic and compliant grant budget.
  • Understand the importance of incorporating overhead costs into your budget.
  • Gain skills in adjusting and managing the budget throughout the grant period.

  • Understand how to allocate expenses appropriately according to the grant guidelines.
  • Learn best practices for managing funds and staying within budget.
  • Gain insight into setting up internal controls to track expenses effectively.

  • Understand the requirements for submitting financial reports to funders.
  • Learn how to prepare timely and accurate reports.
  • Gain insight into maintaining compliance with grant terms and conditions.

  • Learn how to properly close out a grant and prepare for audits (even if your organization doesn’t have audits yet).
  • Understand the importance of reflecting on the grant process to improve future grant management.
  • Gain skills in building relationships with funders for future opportunities.
