About this event

As nonprofit and philanthropic changemakers, public trust is our currency. Without it, advancing our many missions becomes significantly harder, if not impossible. The public’s belief that nonprofits will “do the right thing” is one of the central reasons our sector exists. Communities have relied upon nonprofits for centuries to provide education, culture, life-sustaining services, environmental stewardship, and places of refuge.

For the past five years, Independent Sector’s Trust in Civil Society reports have explored trust in American nonprofits, philanthropic organizations, and other institutions. This year, after four years of decline, trust in nonprofits has rebounded, increasing to 57% and making us the most trusted sector in the 2024 survey. Trust in philanthropy, however, remains steady at 33%, lower than trust in nonprofits.

While the boost in trust for nonprofits is encouraging, the broader context is concerning. Trust in many sectors has dropped, suggesting that Americans are approaching this election season with doubts and distrust. Trust in philanthropy remains lower than trust in nonprofits, even though donors directly support nonprofits’ charitable and community work.

Given its importance, we must regularly assess the status of trust and explore strategies to strengthen our sector’s most valuable asset. We invite you to explore the findings in Independent Sector’s latest report and make plans to join the conversation on strategies to enhance trust at this event. Together, we can strengthen the trust that is fundamental to our sector’s success and our collective work to build a nation where all people thrive.

About Independent Sector & Dr. Akilah Watkins

Independent Sector is the only national membership organization that brings together a diverse community of changemakers, nonprofits, foundations, and corporations working to strengthen civil society and ensure all people in the United States thrive. They envision a world of engaged individuals, robust institutions, and vibrant communities working together to improve lives and the natural world, and strengthen democratic societies. To help create this future, they lead and catalyze the charitable community, partnering with government, business, and individuals to advance the common good.

Dr. Akilah Watkins joined Independent Sector as President and CEO in January 2023. A 25-year national thought leader, conference speaker, and nonprofit executive, Dr. Watkins’ work began at the age of 14 when she led efforts to convert a vacant lot and abandoned home into a community center in Roosevelt, New York. Since then, she’s served as an executive leader for nonprofits and community development initiatives which includes work with the Obama administration, NeighborWorks America, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Center for the Study of Social Policy. Her career’s work has focused on helping people, communities, and local and federal government drive impactful reform for key issues including land banking, property vacancy, childhood obesity, community health, and economic development.
