About this event

It’s common for people to view the executive director of their favorite organization as a lifetime appointee. After all, they are the organization’s public face and the masters of their destiny; who would ever leave that job? As many organizations are discovering, executive directors do leave their jobs – and nonprofits are not immune from the wave of post-pandemic turnover, even in the highest staff positions.

During this session, we’ll explore tactics that volunteer board leaders can engage in before, during, and after a leadership transition to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible and that your next “lifetime appointee” is soon the new face of your organization.

We’ll discuss how to identify, assess, and select a new Executive Director, building a plan for a well-managed transition (in an emergency or a planned departure). Participants will learn about the importance of developing leadership talent within the organization and how to create a succession plan that eases disruptions to daily operations.
