Title
Board Management Workshop – Newport

Facilitator
Sarah Spangler, Nonprofit Education Specialist, NAO

Join us for this full-day workshop, which includes the following three sessions:

Session 1 – Effective Board Management for Meaningful Engagement
Meaningful board service involves more than just attending meetings; a truly engaged board is one whose understanding of their individual and collective roles matches their passion for and dedication to your mission.

Attendees will learn:

  • Roles, responsibilities, and liabilities of the individual and the board as a collective
  • The typical structure of a nonprofit board, including officer positions and key policies
  • How to incorporate tools for effective collaboration between Board Chair and Executive Director
  • Strategies for developing and using a board work plan, including the use of committees to accomplish board work
  • Techniques for running effective board and committee meetings

Session 2 – Bolstering Board Recruitment & Retention
Nearly every nonprofit can benefit from having board members that are more engaged and effective– but how do we set ourselves up for success? This session will help you shift your discussions about recruiting new board members from a “who do we know” conversation toward a more strategic and ongoing board cultivation and recruitment process.

We’ll cover:

  • What to do before you begin: board notebooks, job descriptions, and more
  • Prospecting and recruiting new board members
  • Orienting new board members
  • Tips for better retention

Session 3 – Engaging Your Board in Fundraising
A well-prepared and passionate board is essential to successful fundraising. This session will provide strategies for creating fundraising expectations from the get-go, increasing your board’s understanding of the organization’s revenue needs, finding ways for everyone to play a role, and building board ambassadors for your cause.

Attendees will receive tips for:

  • Solidifying fundraising expectations from the start
  • Providing training to prepare your board for success
  • Shifting perspectives to make fundraising accessible
  • Building confident ambassadors
