Building a Healthy Board
Cohort Facilitator
Kari Anderson, Principal, Incite! Consulting
If you’ve chosen to serve the nonprofit sector, you’ll eventually come into contact with a nonprofit board of directors. Whether you’re a staff member or a member of the board, you want to do the right thing, right? But you can’t do the right thing if you don’t know what it is, why it’s important, and how to do it! Join Kari Anderson with Incite! Consulting for a five-week cohort on how to build the best board for your nonprofit. This cohort will include a baseline in board education, clarification of board/board member/staff roles, what board committees “really” do, how to tackle hard conversations and deal with bad behavior, and succession planning. You’ll come away with a clearer understanding of the important role that boards and board members play in the success of a nonprofit, as well as strategies to implement to make your organization even stronger!
Additional Guidelines
- This learning cohort is intended to support Oregon-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits statewide.
- Participants make a commitment to attend all sessions so we can collectively work together and build a network of support.
- Conversations will be held as confidential to allow for depth and breadth of exploration.
- Limit is 15 individuals per cohort with no more than two (2) representatives from one organization.
Outline
|
Session 1 |
11/07/23 |
Board Education 101: We’ll kick off this cohort with a grounding exercise: 75 minutes of board governance on the fly. Breaking down the 10 responsibilities of nonprofit boards, we’ll cover why connection to cause makes the best board members, board and board member responsibilities, board composition and development, board operations, and the board’s role in fundraising. |
|
Session 2 |
11/14/23 |
Who Does What, Anyway?: Any confusion in your camp as to the role of the board? The board chair? Staff leadership? Shared roles? We’ll spend time talking through the legal responsibilities that boards have as a team and as individual board members. We’ll also discuss the role of your lead staff member, where there is overlap, and nuances based on where you are in the “life cycle” of your nonprofit. |
|
Session 3 |
11/21/23 |
Using Board Committees To Get Board Work Accomplished: There’s an adage that states, “the board’s work isn’t done at the board meeting; it's done in committees." That’s so true! Let’s talk about best practices for board committees: titles, scope of work, what they’re responsible for, and who else to invite. We'll also talk about why board committee work actually makes board meetings more engaging, efficient, and fun! |
|
Session 4 |
11/28/23 |
The Hard Stuff: Sometimes, things go bump in the night. There’s conflict at a board meeting. The bylaws aren’t being adhered to. Bad behavior is accepted as the status quo. Hard conversations are avoided rather than engaged. We’ll review behaviors, practices, and actions that are problematic at best and potentially damaging at worst, and share practical advice to deal with the challenging issue or person. |
|
Session 5 |
12/05/23 |
Board Succession Planning: We all leave the party at some point in time. However, we need others to join the party to ensure that your organization not only stays legal, but has a board to both govern the nonprofit and support the staff. We’ll talk about making board service “palatable,” ensuring that board job descriptions are current, breaking down the roles of board committee chairs and board officers, and building bench strength from board committees. |
