Nonprofit board service is about community leadership. In an era of complexity, significant challenges and continual change, our nonprofit organizations are best served with multiple board leaders. Leadership develops out of genuine engagement. Are we doing all we can to engage board members with meaningful opportunities that contribute to mission achievement? Are we actively developing board leaders for today and tomorrow?

In this highly interactive session, we will:

  • Explore the benefits of fostering a board culture in which learning and leadership development are norms
  • Consider how leadership develops—through a combination of feedback, challenges, and support
  • Revisit expectations for board service and re-frame expectations with leadership in mind
  • Consider the executive director’s role in building board leadership
  • Identify specific steps to create more “leader-full” boards of directors

Join us for “Building Board Leadership” with Paula Manley. Paula brings years of experience as a nonprofit board chair, executive director, board member, and program volunteer. In this lively session, she will provide a combination of theoretical frameworks, practical suggestions, and hands-on learning activities that draw from the experiences of participants.

About the Presenter

Paula Manley is a consultant, facilitator, and educator who helps organizations develop board and staff leaders, embrace diversity, engage in participatory planning, and navigate leadership transitions. She is the principal of Paula Manley Consulting and co-founder of The Learning Commons, a nonprofit that has presented intensive leadership institutes for nonprofit leaders throughout the U.S. since 1997. As an experienced nonprofit executive director, program director, and board leader, Paula brings extensive practical knowledge to her work.

About the Network

Each session of the Mid-Valley Nonprofit Network is designed to strengthen your management skills while providing field-tested concepts and tools to take back to your organization for implementation. In addition to skills development, each session allows for networking and peer coaching in a collaborative learning environment.
