Fraud: The Other Fringe Benefit

Do you know that organizations lose 5% of every dollar to fraud schemes in one form or another? Would you or your financial department know the opportunity points or fraud indicators? While the chances of fraud occurring in your organization —externally or employee perpetrated—may seem unlikely, it is a major economic obstacle costing billions each year in lost revenue and misappropriated assets, according to the US Department of Commerce. Join us for a better understanding of:

  • The fraud environment
  • Various fraud schemes
  • Preventive, detective, and corrective controls
  • Characteristics of a fraudster

Winter Tax Update

This tax update will cover updates to the Form 990 and instructions changes for 2013. The complexity of the Form 990 continues to evolve as we settle in to the redesigned forms. This session will focus on the changes in the form and instructions for 2013 and some of the more complex issues and questions surrounding the reporting of partnership interests, compensation, transactions with “interested persons,” and identifying and reporting related organizations.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for financial managers, controllers, CFOs, executive directors, Board members, and program managers.

About the Presenters

Nancy Young has practiced public accounting since 1996 and has been with Moss Adams since 2006. She is an active member in the Government Industry Group. Previously, she worked for 10 years as an audit manager with the Oregon Secretary of State Audits Division. Her experience includes audits of state, local, and special purpose governments on fraud investigations. Nancy is a Certified Fraud Examiner and an adjunct professor at Portland State University, teaching courses on government accounting and forensic and investigative accounting. Nancy speaks at many professional conferences on the topic of fraud and the cases she has conducted.

Rebecca Griffith is a tax manager in the firm’s Not-for-Profit and Government Industry Group. She provides tax return preparation and other tax matter consulting services to a wide variety of nonprofit clients, including colleges and universities, educational institutions, associations, credit unions, and other nonprofit entities. Rebecca also has extensive experience advising nonprofit organizations on Form 990 reporting issues, lobbying and political activities, unrelated business income tax, obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status, and uncertain tax positions. She is a member of the AICPA and OSCPA.
