In this session, participants will learn the historical evolution of the terms Hispanics, Latin@s, Latinx, Latine, Chican@. In addition, this session will provide an opportunity to reflect on the various terms and how their evolution is related to oppression among individuals who identify as part of this historically underrepresented group. This training is open to people of all backgrounds who want to learn the historical background and build new vocabulary to have deeper conversations with the communities you serve, including your staff.

About the Presenter

Cinthia Manuel, CEO/Founder, Autentica Consulting LLC

Cinthia is an equity, diversity, inclusion, and leadership development consultant, facilitator, strategist, coach, TEDx speaker, and mentor to women of color. She is a first-generation Latina, an immigrant from Mexico City, bilingual (Spanish/English), and bicultural. She is the CEO & Founder of Autentica Consulting and is a proud Latinapreneur.

She has over 19 years of experience working with racially diverse communities and organizations in different capacities in Fortune 500 companies, for-profit, national foundations, and nonprofits. Before starting her consultancy, she led the Emerging Leaders Program, an internship program for undergraduate and graduate students of color in Portland, OR, making it one of the largest racially diverse internship programs of its kind in the state. The Portland Business Journal recognized her as one of the 23 Business people to watch in 2019. Cinthia holds a Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Management Certification from Georgetown University and completed a Masters in Business Administration from George Fox University.

She currently serves on the Oregon Community Foundation Latinx Community Advisory Board and the Northern Willamette Valley Latino Partnership Program, helping allocate funds to Latino communities across the State of Oregon. She was recently appointed to serve on the Benefit Corporations for Good Advisory Council and the Chair of the Hispanic Advisory Committee for Unitus Credit Union. Cinthia is also a national scholarship reader for the United Negro College Fund. She served on the Alumni Advisory Board of the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for nine years. In addition, she was a national scholarship reader for the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Fun facts: She loves making balloon art, enjoys creating magic with her cricut, and her sister and parents are her world.
