Creating Gender Inclusive Teams: Understanding Pronouns to Create Inclusion

Personal pronouns are a common part of speech that many people in Western cultures pay little attention to; however, pronouns are a critical part of everyone’s identity. In the last decade, a significant cultural shift has begun highlighting the use of pronouns, gender-neutral language and the appropriate ways to show respect to people of all gender identities/expressions. Some allies have begun including pronouns in their company email signature to show solidarity in addition to online profiles. Still, it is more complex and nuanced than just these simple acts to create safe and inclusive spaces. This workshop uses practical examples and personal stories from the presenter's experience as a queer, transgender coach and youth soccer club leader.
Objectives:
- Understand the importance of pronouns to individual identity
- Build empathy for transgender and nonbinary communities
- Gain comfort and skills in using gender neutral pronouns
Target Audience:
This workshop is ideal for anyone who is just beginning to understand the importance of using pronouns and gender neutral language respectfully. Those who are eager to increase their allyship skills for transgender and nonbinary identified colleagues and athletes in order to create thriving team cultures will benefit from the interactive and reflective process of the workshop.

About the Presenter

Kaig Lightner, MSW, Founder/CEO, Quantum Gender His experience of working with underserved communities as a social worker since 2005 combined with 25 years as a licensed soccer coach has given him the unique combination of understanding the complexity of systematic oppression and how it impacts minority communities, including in youth sports. It was these overlapping professional experiences that led him to found Portland Community Football Club in 2013, a nonprofit competitive soccer club that provides access to high-quality, affordable soccer for low-income, under-resourced, and marginalized youth across Portland, including LGBTQIA+, Black, Brown, Latinx, immigrants, and refugees. Through his extensive experience as a high level coach and graduate level social work professor, he has honed the skill of breaking down complex ideas into smaller, tangible pieces of information. He uses this skill, combined with emotional intelligence, and trauma-informed knowledge to help cisgender people understand not just how to be inclusive of all genders, but to also deeply reflect on how they came to understand their own gender identity. As a white person he also focuses on anti-racist work through the lens of speaking openly about his white privilege and the ways he now experiences cisgender and heterosexual privilege as well.
