COSO: New Standards Governing Fiscal Policy & Procedures

COSO, also known as the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission, is dedicated to providing guidance to executive management and governance on critical aspects of organizational governance. COSO is most known for developing two major frameworks of guidance—an integrated framework on internal controls, and one for enterprise risk management. While many of us may be familiar with these concepts, we may not be familiar with applying the concepts in our nonprofit organizations.

This presentation will use business process mapping as a visual tool to evaluate the COSO framework, particularly on internal controls. We will:

• Develop a simple business process map
• Pinpoint areas of weakness
• Use the COSO framework to analyze weaknesses
• Discuss how business process mapping can be used on a wider scale in NFP organizations

About the Presenter

Liz Clarke joined AKT LLP in May of 2007. She is dedicated to serving nonprofit organizations and has extensive training in nonprofit accounting issues. Liz has also consulted with many of for profit and nonprofit organizations on evaluating internal controls and strategic and business planning. She has a Masters of Business Administration from Willamette University.
