Why & How to Build Bullying-Free Workplaces

Online

About this event

American organizations accept aggression — top-down and among peers — as inevitable. It need not be. People adapt to the culture where they work. Though many would naturally choose to bully others, they only try it where it can be done with impunity. Bullying occurs in all organizations; it's part of our society. However, you can stop it at the door, it is preventable.

According to the 2021 WBI national survey 30% of adult Americans directly experienced abusive conduct and another 19% witnessed it. Consider the impact on your organization when half of them walk on eggshells distracted by fear. Further, research shows that perpetrators, the bullies, hold their jobs while they are responsible for the drain of talent as the best and brightest are driven out. Sometimes the senior administrative team is unaware. In some cases, they implicitly endorse the self-destructive practice. This pattern of reinforcement can be reversed.

The program: After a quick review of the definition of bullying and its prevalence and characteristics, we discuss how to recognize its presence in your workplace. The session next turns to the rationale for taking action. To do otherwise compromises employee health, trust and loyalty in addition to undermining your mission and goals. There are several alternatives to inaction. The blueprint with action steps are discussed. Just two of the several benefits derived from doing "the right thing" are improved retention of key talent and easier recruitment based on your marketable bullying-free status.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • define workplace bullying (abusive conduct at work)
  • identify indicators of its existence in their organizations
  • understand the harm suffered by targeted individuals
  • calculate the costs to the organization of inaction
  • name at least two reasons, relevant to their organization, to act
  • describe at least two actions they are able to implement
  • anticipate barriers to implementation
  • plan how to tout their bullying-free status in the marketplace
