This expanded series is an advanced learning cohort in grantwriting and grants management through a combination of online study and weekly zoom meetings for problem-based and case-based discussion. The online portion of the course is interactive and on-demand, providing reading, research, quizzes, videos, and writing assignments to help you write a grant proposal step-by-step. By the end of the course, you will have completed a grant proposal with your instructor’s individualized, guided assistance and peer review. The course will also teach you where to find grants, how to write grant reports, ethics, and how to build relationships with grantmakers so that you have all the information you need to write and manage grants successfully. Participants who complete the grant proposal will receive a digital badge and electronic Certificate in Grantwriting from Spark the Fire Grantwriting Classes. Participants should expect to dedicate 3 hours per week of study, discussion, and writing.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

1. Develop a prospect research plan to form a grants calendar of potential grantmakers.
2. Write a complete grant proposal step-by-step with the individualized assistance of the instructor and peer review.
3. Understand best practices in communicating with grantmakers before, during, and after the grant submission.

Additional Guidelines

• This learning series is intended to support Oregon-based 501(c)(3) all-volunteer to small staffed nonprofits in rural communities statewide.
• Each session will provide nonprofit leaders with vetted information, ideas, and peer support as they navigate a flood of critical decisions they must make in 2021 and beyond.  
• Limit is 10 individuals per cohort with no more than one representative from each organization. If you'd like to register more than one individual from your organization, contact us at [email protected]. 
• Participants make a commitment to attend all sessions.

About the Cohort Facilitator

Allison Shirk, Founder, Spark The Fire Grantwriting Classes Allison Shirk is the Founder, Executive Director and Instructor of Spark the Fire Grantwriting Classes, an organization providing quality grantwriting to more than 1,500 nonprofits and institutions since 2013. Shirk has more than twenty years of experience in grantwriting and nonprofit management and has helped nonprofits raise millions of dollars to make a powerful positive impact on our communities. She is passionate about teaching and provides highly interactive, learner-centric learning experiences. She is an adjunct professor at Seattle Central College and Lower Columbia College. She is an approved, vetted trainer by 501 Commons and the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and is a member of the Grant Professionals Association. Shirk is also a columnist for the Foundation Center, New York.
