Building Inclusive Teams and Mitigating Structural Bias

As the demographics of our communities continue to change, organizations are striving to reflect the communities they serve. This interactive session focuses on how the implicit attitudes, behaviors, policies, and practices may influence how we engage with individuals and/or groups and make decisions in the workplace. The session provides an introductory exploration of the intersection of privilege, cognitive and structural bias, and micro and macro aggressions. The session reinforces the importance of having cultural agility and empathy and developing intentional tools and strategies for recruitment and retention.
Participants will be able to:
- Gain an introductory understanding of the intersectionality of privilege
- Identify the differences between unconscious and structural/institutional bias
- Explore strategies to mitigate bias in decision-making

Gerardo Ochoa, Ed.M., Director of Community Relations and Special Assistant to the President, Linfield University Gerardo Ochoa (He, Him, Él) is Director of Community Relations and Special Assistant to the President at Linfield University in McMinnville and Portland, OR. He has served Linfield in multiple capacities since 2004. Mr. Ochoa holds formal appointments to the President’s Diversity Advisory Committee (chair) and the College’s strategic planning and budget councils. |
