How to Conduct an Internal Equity Audit

Conducting an equity audit is an important step that nonprofits can take to move beyond holding conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion and into taking actionable steps to create systemic change. This session is intended for organizations that are ready for the next step in their diversity, equity, and inclusion work but unsure of how to proceed. We will provide a broad overview of what an equity audit is, how you can structure an equity audit process and apply an equity assessment tool when you have collective support and buy-in across your organization to move forward, but lack the funds to hire staff or a consultant to facilitate and guide the process.
By the end of this session you will have an understanding of:
- What an equity audit is and how it can help your organization.
- How to structure an equity audit steering committee to guide the work.
- Examples of equity audit tools you can apply to your organization.
- Insight into common challenges.
- Insight into how this work can make your organization more effective, inclusive, and impactful.

Alexis James, Director of Training & Organization Development, Cascade Employers Association Alexis James is a longtime educator and innovator. She supports Cascade members in activating contemporary responses to leadership development and employee needs through training, coaching, and team building. As a former classroom teacher, she is an engaging and empathetic trainer at meetings, board trainings, and mediations. Prior to joining the Cascade team, she was the Program Director at a statewide literacy nonprofit, where she specialized in creating an inclusive culture through supervision training, data analysis, and diversity, equity, and inclusion implementation. Alexis is a native Oregonian, earning her Master’s Degree from Lewis & Clark College. |
