NAO has brought together two experts in emergency response and contingency planning to provide an overview of the stages and steps domestic nonprofits should be considering as we respond to the public health crisis and adjust our organizational priorities and actions to respond and recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. It is never too late to build your organization’s awareness of the right steps to take and what contingencies you should be planning for. Join this informative session!

Panelists/Moderator

Susan Romanski – Senior Director, Humanitarian Capacity Building and Global Engagement, Mercy Corps

Susan is the Senior Director for Humanitarian Capacity Building and Global Engagement at Mercy Corps.  She leads a team responsible for supporting humanitarian preparedness and capacity building efforts around the globe.  Prior to this role, Susan led Mercy Corps’s business continuity and preparedness efforts in the Pacific NW.  Those efforts were designed to help low income and culturally specific groups in the Portland area better understand and prepare for natural disaster risks. 

Susan currently serves as the Vice President of the network Oregon Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (ORVOAD) and is a public member of the Oregon Seismic Safety and Policy and Advisory Commission (OSSPAC), which is tasked with promoting earthquake awareness and preparedness in Oregon.

Over her 20 year career in disaster preparedness and response, Susan has responded to US emergencies such as Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Michael in Florida, as well as overseas emergencies in Zimbabwe, Sudan, Niger, Iraq, Iran, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, El Salvador, and Mozambique.

Steph Sharp, CEM CBCP – Safety and Preparedness Manager, COVID 19 Incident Command, CareOregon

Steph is the Manager of Safety and Preparedness for CareOregon. Her prior experience spans 15 years and includes work for the City of Boston’s Office of Public Health Preparedness during the H1N1 pandemic, as well as and planning and response work for public and private sector entities including Multnomah County, PGE, and the Port of Portland.  She holds an MBA from Concordia University and professional certifications in both Emergency Management and Business Continuity.

Jim is deeply committed to social change and has worked in the nonprofit sector both domestically and internationally for more than 20 years. He is passionate about affecting systemic change results in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors working together to support and strengthen civil society.
