Being Prepared: Planning for the Worst (or Best) Scenario

About this event

David W. Altman, Chief Financial Officer
Central City Concern

Continental Breakfast & Presentation at 7:30
Networking at 9:00

Event Description

Headlines tell stories about federal budget deficits and potential cost cutting; donations are down from traditional supporters; foundations face fewer resources to provide grants when the investment returns remain weak; and the state of Oregon and local governments forecast shortfalls and potential reductions in funding. What are fiscal managers and other nonprofit leaders supposed to do with uncertainty like this? You can expect some help from a fresh look at the application of scenario planning, often common in business finance and accounting, to what might be useful for nonprofits.
The session will cover:

  • Scenario planning, sensitivity analysis, and similar concepts for financial and non-financial forecasting
  • Common tools such as the What-if function in newer versions of Excel and templates from nonprofit accountants and finance professionals
  • A step-by-step approach to nonprofit scenario planning for worst and best case situations
  • General applications of scenario planning
  • Recommendations and tips on difficult discussions with your executive team and board members
