This session explores leadership as it concerns culturally competent service delivery and workforce diversity and inclusion. Join us to learn about:
- Ways culture and cultural context can shape how people define problems, seek help, perceive credible providers and relevant services, and evaluate their satisfaction with services provided
- Various rationale for cultural competence and workforce diversity, beyond the business case
- Insights into models of cultural and linguistic competence
- Approaches for cultural competence self-assessment and ongoing staff development
- Strategies for viewing cultural and linguistic competence as a process as opposed to an event
The session will be a blend of lecture and small and large group activities. Together, we will establish a safe and collegial environment that will ultimately help participants enhance their cultural and linguistic competence in population based programs.
About the Presenter
Dr. James Mason is the Executive Director of Culturally Competent Caregiving for the Providence Health and Services, Oregon Region and is the former Director of Multicultural Health for the State of Oregon. He has worked in higher education as an administrator, researcher, and educator since 1977. Dr. Mason has spoken at colleges, universities, and health and human service bureaucracies in the United States, Latin America, and Canada applying concepts of workforce diversity and culturally competent service delivery to a variety of service disciplines, including: education, higher education, public health, mental health, child welfare, maternal and child health, and alcohol and drug treatment.
