How Donor-Centrism Perpetuates Inequality: Why We Must Move Towards Community-Centric Fundraising

Cultivating giving is central to our work as stewards of resource development in nonprofit organizations, and individual donors are a critical component of our fundraising efforts. That being said, nonprofits exist to meet the needs of our communities and our communities contribute to the success of our missions in many ways beyond individual financial gifts.
As nonprofit organizations authentically seek to become more inclusive and equitable with their programs and practices, we must also apply a critical lens on how we think about giving. This requires us to consider how structural and societal racism have shaped the approach to fundraising. This critical exploration is necessary so that we can take meaningful action to change the way we work to cultivate resources for greater good. In this session, we will discuss the need to shift our collective thinking away from donor-centric fundraising towards community-centric fundraising. This session will be most relevant to those with leadership responsibilities in fundraising and resource development, but is open to all who would like to explore a new way of thinking around community-centric fundraising. This will be an interactive session with time to reflect and to take action.

About the Presenter
| Carla Penn-Hopson, Major Gifts Officer, Self Enhancement, Inc.
Carla Penn-Hopson brings over 35 years of experience in organizational and capacity building; training; program evaluation and compliance; fund-development; grant-writing; contract negotiation; and board development. Currently she serves as the Major Gifts Officer at Self Enhancement Inc. Throughout her professional career she has devoted her skills, expertise, time and energy to ensure that families gain a strong sense of worth and become informed and educated regarding their rights and resources within the community. |
