During this conversation, Michael will share his story and perspective on how he has navigated race in the workplace – in the business, public, community and nonprofit worlds.

Participants will:

  • Learn about listening and querying
  • Gain insights into tangible ways in which we all can have uncomfortable yet candid conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion and take action
  • Become actively engaged in changing our own narratives

About the Presenter

Michael Alexander, Community and Business Leader; Retired President and CEO, Urban League of Portland

Michael Alexander is an influential and well-respected business and community leader in the state of Oregon. While he officially retired in 2015, he is busier than ever before serving our community and advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion. In 2016, Michael was appointed by the Governor of Oregon to the Port of Portland Board of Commissioners. He also serves as the Chair of the Black United Fund of Oregon, Board Secretary of Northwest Health Foundation. Michael is a member of the following: University of Oregon President’s Diversity Advisory Council, Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon Community Advisory Board, Wells Fargo Community Advisory Board, Black Male Achievement Steering Committee and Lifeworks Northwest African American Advisory Committee.

Michael is actively involved in a group, which includes Rukaiyah Adams, Chief Investment Officer of Meyer Memorial Trust and other prominent community members, developers and business leaders, who are advancing and advocating a development plan for Portland’s Rose Quarter area called Albina Vision. The plan includes mixed-use buildings and dense housing that can accommodate multiple income levels, as well as easy access to amenities. Prior to Michael’s official retirement, he was President/CEO of the Urban League of Portland from 2012 to 2015, where he made great strides in restoring fiscal discipline to its operations, reconnecting with key business and foundation partners, and re-engaging the organization's base of supporters. Prior to the Urban League, he served in executive roles at Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, Magellan Behavioral Health, and Aetna, including four years as Vice President and Executive Director of the Aetna Foundation. He served as founding Chair of the Cambia (Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield) Foundation and was on the boards of LifeWorks Northwest, the American Leadership Forum of Oregon (past chair), Portland Parks & Recreation and was United Way of the Columbia-Willamette Campaign Cabinet Co-Chair (2007-2010).

Michael earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Lewis University and a Master of Science degree in Social Services from Bryn Mawr College. He is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow. Michael is married to lovely wife, Nancy. He is the proud parent of Derek, Shannon and Christopher and proud grandparent to Caleb, Brandon, Xavier and Laila.
