Equity and inclusion are both a moral imperative and good for nonprofit business and our society. Nonprofits are stronger when every board and staff member takes action in this direction.
Equity, as it relates to group differences, focuses on promoting justice, impartiality, and fairness within the procedures and processes of institutions or systems, as well as their distribution of resources. Tackling equity issues requires an understanding of the underlying or root causes of outcome disparities within our society. Inclusion focuses on the behaviors and practices that seek out, invite, welcome, allow, engage, involve or in other ways include broad participation-- particularly of disenfranchised and underrepresented groups-- in information sharing, events, dialogue, input, creative initiatives, support, problem solving, decision making, and sharing of resources and control.
In this workshop, participants will:
- Explore inclusion and equity from the individual, group and systems levels
- Learn how to develop the basic knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviors needed to support and lead equity and inclusion work within their nonprofit
- Gain tools for effectively partnering across differences
Who Should Attend?
This training is a primer for board and staff who are new to equity and inclusion and for more experienced board and staff members. Each person will be invited to assess their current capacity and use the training to gain new insights and set new goals.
About the Presenter
With a background in Participatory Leadership, Sara Curiel Paez has 10 years of experience in leadership development, civic engagement, facilitation and training. As a first generation Mexican-American woman, Sara deeply believes that all people have value and that leadership happens through reflection, listening and dialogue. Sara has worked throughout rural Oregon as a trainer and facilitator on a variety of topics including leadership development, project management, and organizational development. Sara has delivered the Ford Institute Leadership Program in rural communities as well as Cultivando Comunidad and the Raices program. She has extensive experience developing curriculum on civic engagement for the Latino community. She is a certified MBTI trainer.
Alexis Millett has been providing training, consulting, coaching, facilitation, and program management to organizations throughout Oregon since joining NAO in 2011. Alexis designs and delivers high quality, interactive trainings that engage participants in current organizational development challenges. She has experience working with nonprofit leadership, staff, boards, and volunteers. In addition, Alexis brings over 10 years of experience facilitating difficult dialogue and delivering trainings on race, cultural competency, and privilege. Alexis brings an equity and inclusion lens to all her organizational development work. She believes that diversity, equity and inclusion work must be integrated into the fabric of an organization to transform how board, staff, and volunteers work to create inclusive work environments and high-impact program strategies.
