Barbara Gibbs, Senior Consultant
Nonprofit Association of Oregon
Presentation, and continental breakfast at 8:00; Meet our new ED & networking at 9:30
Conventional wisdom says that nonprofits should have diverse revenue streams, and funders often emphasize the importance of multiple sources of income. Yet recent publications by thought leaders, such as The Bridgespan Group, FSG, and others, suggest that very successful nonprofits, especially some that have grown large rapidly, prioritize one type of funding over others and get very good at pursuing those sources. We also know that, for better or worse, many small and mid-sized nonprofits rely heavily on one or two sources of income.
In this session, we will consider the following questions:
- How do we make sense of these facts and findings?
- How do small and mid-sized nonprofits assess their funding models?
- How do we decide to stick with what we’re doing or to pursue a new funding strategy?
- Are different strategies appropriate for different points in the organizational life cycle?
- Most fundamentally, how should we spend our limited time on fundraising for the best results?
Come prepared to share your opinions on these topics. What we know for sure is that one size doesn’t fit all and innovative organizations don’t necessarily follow the rules!
