The federal government and academic experts have now documented the reality that most Executive Directors have known for years. Government, foundation, and charity watchdog efforts to avoid “waste” in the nonprofit sector have resulted in confusion, inefficiency, and systematic barriers to sustainability. Check out the 2010 Government Accountability Office report to Congress on nonprofit infrastructure and overhead costs, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review discussion of The Nonprofit Starvation Cycle to see the destructive impact of misguided efforts to “reduce overhead.”
At least you’ll know that your nonprofit is not alone in struggling to fund the cost of effective management, appropriate technology, and efficient facilities and equipment in an environment that is deeply suspicious of administrative, indirect, overhead, or infrastructure costs.
Join us to explore practical strategies to ensure that your nonprofit’s budget includes adequate support for these essential functions. We’ll look at multiple approaches to:
- Deal with multiple definitions of administrative, management, shared, indirect, and overhead costs
- Comply with restrictions/limitations on admin/overhead costs in government and foundation funding
- Evaluate the pros and cons of federally negotiated indirect cost rates for nonprofits with direct federal awards
- Present overhead costs effectively in budget proposals and financial reports
- Increase efficiency and effectiveness through wise investment in essential infrastructure
