Advanced Volunteer Engagement

Engaging Volunteers in Rural is essential to achieving organization’s missions. This session will review volunteer engagement and volunteer program development best practices. Once concepts are reviewed, we will dive into actual challenges organizations in the room are facing, and strategize how to apply the concepts to these real life examples.
- Participants will have a better understanding of volunteer engagement best practices.
- Participants will have the opportunity to apply best practices to their own organizations.
- Participants will engage with and get coaching from peers around current challenges they face pertaining to engagement.

Social media is an invaluable tool when used effectively – most of us dabble in it with our personal lives but struggle to take that next step and engage on an organizational or business level. These online mediums can help successfully engage community members, promote special events, highlight local businesses, as well as connect users and families. This presentation will add social media tools to your marketing and outreach toolkit, including best practices and content creation strategies for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and more. Come with a laptop, mobile device, and/or notepad to this interactive session.
- Participants will have a better understanding of the functionality across social media platforms
- Participants will feel more comfortable and empowered to use these communication mediums
- Participants will be able to identify and evaluate the best social media platform(s) for engaging community

Building a Strong, Compliant Nonprofit

Passion and dedication are rarely lacking in nonprofits – but strong structures, policies and procedures are also important aspects to running an effective and compliant nonprofit. During this session we will review what it takes to have a compliant nonprofit that supports its board, staff and volunteers to focus on mission impact.

About the Trainers

Alexa Carey
Alexa is a native rural Oregonian who grew up in the coastal community of Gold Beach. She has degrees in Marketing, Management, and Business Administration – International Business from the University Honors College at Oregon State University. Before joining Travel Oregon, she was a RARE participant helping new entrepreneurs at the Umpqua Business Center in Roseburg and a Regional Program Coordinator serving communities through leadership training and economic development work with Rural Development Initiatives in Eugene. In her free time, she volunteers with local Oregon Main Street programs, facilitates Startup Weekends, trains small businesses in social media, and explores the state by paddle, pedal, and fork.

Alexis Millett
Alexis manages NAO’s Rural Programs and Helpline and Resources Hub. Through a partnership with the Ford Institute for Community Building, she manages and delivers the Effective Organizations and Community Collaborations Workshops as well as the Pathways to Community Vitality Program. This work deepens NAO’s engagement in rural communities by building the capacity of leaders, organizations, and communities to work together to get things done. Through the Helpline, Alexis provides information and resources to emerging and established nonprofits statewide.
Alexis has a deep appreciation and commitment to empowering small organizations and the communities they serve through inclusive, mindful, and strength-based approaches. Prior to her work at NAO, Alexis managed projects for a real estate start-up company in Seattle that specialized in community-oriented design and was deeply engaged in youth development work throughout undergraduate and graduate school. She conducted her master’s research around the use of hip-hop recording studios in youth organizations located in Worcester, MA. She has a Master of Arts in Community Development and Planning with a focus on Youth Development from Clark University.
A native of the Pacific Northwest, Alexis loves the outdoors, exploring, and taking photographs. She spends her spare time running, training a small group of women around health and fitness, hiking, and crafting.
