Contributing to a thriving diverse workplace or community is a life-long journey that requires an ongoing process of learning, self-reflection, relationship-building, and action. We’ll explore key dynamics of diversity and practice foundational skills for connecting across cultural differences and similarities.

This highly interactive session will draw on each of our own personal experiences and invite deeper understanding. Through structured listening activities, small- and large-group conversation, journaling, and just a small amount of presentation, participants will explore:

  • Multiple cultural identities—their own and others’
  • Key concepts and experiences of oppression/unearned disadvantage
  • Dynamics and experiences of privilege/unearned advantage
  • Skills for connecting across differences through introspection, mindful listening, and reflective inquiry

Since we view this as a lifelong journey, we will conclude by reviewing ways each of us can deepen our understanding and effectiveness beyond this workshop through ongoing learning, self-reflection, relationship-building, and action.

This presentation takes a broad view of cultural diversity, and encompasses many areas of identity: race, ethnicity, gender, ability, socioeconomic status, region, profession, and many more.

About the Presenters

Roberta Hunte, a member of the Northwest Collaborative for Mindful Facilitation, is completing her PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies and is an instructor at Portland State University and Portland Community College in Conflict Resolution, Women’s Studies, and Family Studies. She is passionate about social justice and equity. She is a Board member for OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon and the Oregon Peace Institute. She is an anti-racism activist and educator. She is a black woman of US and West Indian heritage and has lived in Roanoke, VA; Atlanta, GA; Johannesburg, South Africa; Winnipeg, Canada; and now Portland, OR.

Sandy Bacharach is a white woman from southern California. She came to Portland for college, which is where she realized her affinity towards Latinos (and ladies). Sandy has studied and traveled extensively throughout Latin America and currently works as a Spanish Language Mediation Specialist with Resolutions Northwest. Sandy has developed and led trainings in English and Spanish on communication and conflict resolution, advanced bilingual mediation, interrupting racism, and addressing the intersection of race/racism in mediation. Sandy enjoys leading trainings like this one because she has experienced many of them as a participant and loved the opportunities they provided for self reflection and opening up her world view.

Teri Pierson is the Facilitation Program Coordinator at Resolutions Northwest and a member of the Northwest Collaborative for Mindful Facilitation. For Teri, training on equity, diversity, and racism is a way both to continue her own learning and to build our community’s capacity to work through these issues. She has trained on topics including mindful facilitation of intercultural conflict, exploring racism through Image Theater, and interrupting oppression. During her graduate studies, she partnered with NAO to develop training materials on intercultural conflict resolution. Teri is a European American bisexual woman from a middle-class background and a student of Aikido (a Japanese martial art).
