Contrary to some notions, planning is not dead. It remains a fundamental component of a high-impact, sustainable organization. However, planning is definitely changing. Traditional approaches and principle have fostered new means of answering the fundamental questions every group must answer: what difference do we want to make, and how will we make it?

This workshop will provide core principle of planning that are universal – authentic engagement, participatory decision-making, form-follows function – and provides interesting new strategies for moving groups through these issues. The session will give broad overview of planning approaches and how to decide what approach makes sense. It will also introduce specific tools that groups can use to organize and guide their planning efforts.

About the Presenter

Allison Handler Allison Handler got her first taste of public service as a land use planner in Missoula, Montana. She went on to found the Land Stewardship Program, a housing land trust in Missoula. She moved to Oregon to serve as the executive director of the Portland Community Land Trust (now Proud Ground), and she has served on the boards of the National Community Land Trust Network, Northwest Community Land Trust Coalition and Growing Gardens. Her work focuses on organizational assessment and strategy development, with an eye to helping groups position themselves for mission success, greater awareness of their work, and greater influence on the issues that matter to them. Allison holds an MS in environmental studies from the University of Montana and a BA in philosophy from Williams College.
