Roque Barros, Director, Ford Institute for Community Building

Who are the hard to reach and where are the unheard voices in your community and in your organization? Your stated values, principles, and practices demonstrate your commitment to diversity and being inclusive. In this session we will talk about actions you, your organization, and the community can take to be profoundly inclusive and to create the change you and others want to see. Come and learn about the Community-Based Change principles and practices that help communities create and lead the change they want to see. You will see examples of other communities and groups that have been successful in implementing this approach. In this session, you will work as a team in developing plans and actions you can take back to your organization and community that will help you become more inclusive and action-oriented. Get ready to challenge yourself and others in coming up with innovative ways that address uncomfortable change.

About the Presenter

Roque Barros Roque Barros assumed his duties as director for the Ford Institute for Community Building in March 2015. Barros comes to the Foundation from Austin, Texas, where he served as vice president of community impact at Southwest Key Programs, a national organization in Austin, Texas. The nonprofit provides education, shelter and alternatives to incarceration for more than 200,000 youth and their families annually. He has worked as an adviser to communities nationwide on how to conduct resident-led work. In addition, he served as the interim president of the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation and as executive director of Los Niños, an organization involved in community development and educational programs along the U.S.-Mexico border. As the director of the Institute, Barros leads the Ford Institute Leadership Program and associated trainings. In his work with Southwest Key Programs, he created a curriculum that builds the capacity of local residents to lead the change they want to see in their neighborhoods.
