Join nonprofit leaders for a full-day Nonprofit Leadership Track running concurrently with the Alliance for Nonprofit Management’s Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. You’ll join leading nonprofit capacity builders for a breakfast and lunch keynote presentation, and choose three of six specially designed breakout sessions focused on themes most relevant to innovative nonprofit leadership.

The Nonprofit Work Ethic Reinvented in An Age of Hyper Connectivity: Strategies for Impact Without Burnout

Thought leader and author of the award-winning Networked Nonprofit books, Beth Kanter will share some provocative ideas from her next book, a work in progress. As social media has become more widely adopted in the nonprofit sector, hyper connectivity is contributing to the state of overworked and overwhelmed that is so common to many. A new mindset and approach is desperately needed for individuals and is also a cultural imperative for the organization as a whole.
We will learn how nonprofits can redefine organizational culture to improve attitudes and personal habits for sustainable impact.

Plenary Keynote: Patrisse Cullors

Inspired to action by the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, Patrisse Cullors along with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, helped launch the Twitter hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. Patrisse also serves as the Truth and Reinvestment Campaign Director for The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, working to build the response capacity of communities who are affected by state and law enforcement violence. This dynamic plenary session features Patrisse in conversation with Sean Thomas-Breitfeld, the Alliance’s partner at the Building Movement Project. Together they will address and explore how social justice movements like Black Lives Matter have unique opportunities and challenges to building capacity.

What’s Race Got to Do With It? Racial Equity in Capacity Building

This session will explore the impact of the historic racial justice movement and how race shows up in organizations, in practices, and in the field.

Talk is Cheap (and Effective): Strengthening Connections and Building Capacity through Reflective Discussion

This participatory session will provide an introduction to and experience of reflective discussion, an adaptable, inexpensive, and effective conversation practice that builds and sustains engagement.

Chunk, Flip, Guide, Laugh: How People Learn Best

Together we will explore the four “pathways” to creating higher-impact learning experiences: How to CHUNK key information, FLIP it into multi-purpose tools, and GUIDE participants forward step by step, using the power of LAUGHTER and games.

Happy Healthy Nonprofits: Creating a Culture of Replenishment

Join the Nonprofit Association of Oregon for our annual meeting reception and hear Beth Kanter deliver a rousing keynote around how we, as nonprofit leaders, stretch ourselves too thin. Beth will share some provocative ideas on who nonprofits can amplify their mission by prioritizing staff and volunteer care. Beth draws from her experience, speaking engagements across the country and drawing on learning from a design lab earlier in the day, where participants explored these ideas. Learn more.
