Does Your Nonprofit Really Need an Audit Committee?

Effective audit committees do much more than select the independent auditor—they assess emerging risks and evaluate both management’s controls and the performance of the Board finance committee. In fact, most nonprofit leaders would love to have a committee that stepped up to the responsibilities described in the AICPA Not-for-Profit Audit Toolkit .

So what holds many of us back from establishing an audit committee? Usually it’s a combination of staff time and Board energy and expertise. Ironically, many nonprofits are finding that the formation of an audit committee turns out to be an unexpected conduit for bringing financial experts onto the Board. Join nonprofit leaders to discuss the benefits and challenges of establishing an audit committee. Discussion topics will include:

  • Audit committee roles and responsibilities
  • Recruiting financial experts to serve on audit committees
  • Finance committees functioning as audit committees
  • Meaningful audit committee conversations with auditors

    • About the Presenter

    Kay Sohl has provided training and consultation for CFOs, executive directors, and Boards of over 5,000 nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. Kay’s work is focused on redevelopment of nonprofit business models, compliance with federal funding requirements, financial management, and Board governance issues. Kay is a frequent presenter for AICPA national nonprofit conferences, and has worked extensively with community action agencies, domestic violence programs, land trusts, affordable housing, and a variety of state and local public and private funding agencies. She is co-author of The Oregon Nonprofit Corporation Handbook, a comprehensive guide to legal, financial, governance, and management issues for community-based nonprofits, now in its 4th edition; and continues to teach nonprofit financial management for the Portland State University School of Public Administration.
