About this event
To most people, data by itself is just a bunch of numbers. Even color-coded, clearly labeled graphs can fail to pique interest, or worse, they can fail to convey the necessary information. But those of us who rely on data to solve problems or show our successes know that the numbers often have a story to tell. So how do you tell it?
Infographics have become increasingly popular because, when done well, they can take complex information and make it accessible, relatable, and interesting. A good infographic with attractive images and design also has a lot of viral potential because social media favors visually rich content and bite-sized information.
Over four Tuesdays starting April 14, join Idealware as we show you how to create infographics that inform your audience and incite action. We’ll help you see what kinds of data are best translated into infographics and find the stories hidden in your data. We’ll also walk you through the practical steps of creating and using your infographic and look at example of how other organizations created successful infographics. And best of all, we’ll help you develop your own infographic that you can begin using right away.
Throughout the course, you will:
- Identify what you hope to accomplish with an infographic and the ways you want to use it.
- Learn techniques for finding useful data—both public and within your own organization.
- Learn how to translate your data into a compelling story.
- Review tools that can help you create your infographic.
- Consider visual techniques and strategies to display your information.
- Walk through the practical considerations from concept to completion.
- Explore the communications opportunities an infographic creates.
- Walk away with a simple infographic you can use to help your organization start a conversation or promote a cause.
Toolkit Schedule
All 90 minute sessions take place on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (PST).
April 14: Defining Your Goals and Finding Your Data
It all starts with data and the impact you think it can have. We’ll start out this session talking about who you’re trying to reach and how an infographic might support your organization’s goals. Then we’ll get down to the details of where to look for data or how to create data that might make a compelling infographic.
April 21: How to Find the Story in Your Data
Data without a story is just a series of attractive graphs. We’ll discuss how to analyze your data to figure out whether you have a story and how to craft the right story for your organization’s needs.
April 28: Create Your Own Infographic
This session will help you move beyond theory and start developing an infographic of your own. We’ll guide you along the way by showing you what kind of infographic is likely to work best, visualization best practices, and various tools you can use to start building.
May 5: What It Takes to Complete the Job
There are a lot of practical steps to completing an infographic. Beyond gathering information and developing a story, you also need a graphic designer who understands your concept and has the talent to both translate it into imagery and graphics and make it visually appealing. And once you create your infographic, you need a strategy for how to distribute and promote it. We’ll review some of the logistical aspects of creating an infographic to help you get started with a solid footing.
